When we plan a trip into the great unknown it is most important to be properly prepared to go out there and brave all that Africa may throw at you, and believe me she will throw. So be ready to shoot!

The biggest regret I have as a traveller is I always make the mistake of not taking enough pictures, so shoot shoot shoot! Don’t worry whether it feels right or if the light doesn’t work for every picture taken, it will all form part of your story. Your story… steal it, write words, many of them in a journal or a book or on the back of your cigarette box, just do it! Steal as much as you can when you are travelling! There is so much you will do now that one day you will have to lie – the lie that you are perfectly happy that you took enough pictures out there, jotted down enough stories and kept them all in a safe place.

Our memory fades as we grow older and we often need a refresher course on who we were, where we travelled, who we met, what we ate, and most of all how it felt.

As our lives change we can look back on the memories with a different view, and re- explore our travels from our armchair or with our grandchildren. Our planet certainly is changing and the truth is shown in many an old black and white photo of places all over the world.

As travellers, our value systems are different – our wealth is our collection of experiences, a bank of shining memories, most valuable and never lost. So go out there shoot steal and lie, do it always!!

Safe Travels,
Darren Putter
